An is an avant-garde rock/alternative/metal project based in the US Territory of Guam (an island about 3 hours South of Japan by plane) and is currently a one-man project of vocalist HIMITSU. Enola Reven also does most of the composing, recording, production and design alone. The debut album ‘Disassociation Fugue’ is an emotionally expressive journey through the minds of the mentally ill, something Himitsu has personal experience with.
The album begins with a haunting ballad which the album was titled after, and moves on into heavier, more aggressive and downright weird songs. There’s also sweet, soft and sad melodies separated by atmospheric electronica/noise intermissions reminiscent of a JRPG like Final Fantasy. The whole album makes use of silence, gentle fades and minimalism contrasting with abrupt changes, growls and intense heavy noise in an unnerving way. Himitsu hopes the music will help those who are struggling with mental illness and relate to the lyrics.
The album in digital format comes with 2 music videos (which you can watch on Youtube) – a simple but beautiful lyric video for the opening track, and a music video for ‘Depression’, which features scenes filmed in Seattle, Guam and Tokyo as well as a cameo by Japanese handpan (a type of steel drum popular with street performers) player Kashiwa Hang, who composed the intro and outro for the song.
