Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in downtown Detroit and I reside in Detroit now. I spend several weeks a year living and working in Paris as well. It’s become my second home.
What project are you working on right now?
I am putting the finishing touches on my F/W 20/21 collection. We debut GHOST in Paris on 28 February though March 5 at 9 Showroom Place Des Vosges In Paris. This is my first collection since 94 and first time with a space and brand manager in Paris. I have traveled there over 30 times in the last 12 years. I have not missed a fashion week in all that time. I started by shooting runway and models there, then campaigns for some luxury brands. I have an incredible network of friends in the fashion and art world there.
How would you describe the passion for what you do?
It’s hard to describe. I am making structured 3D shapes out of flat mesh, sculptures, and it’s Incredibly compelling. It consumes me in a way. I think about it day and night. I guess it’s kinda like a switch flipped and all these ideas keep coming. I always have a couple fantasy pieces in the works. The fact that there are no rules except the thing has to sit on, or orbit your head somehow, is the most exciting part.
Tell us your future:
I’m an artist. That’s all I’ve ever been. I will keep making art. I have a thriving fine art photography business selling large format photographs. I continue to shoot fashion and architecture for brands and publications. Now I will be putting hats on heads. I am showing some hats in a gallery exhibition in the near future. I hope to cross over the line from fashion into art. It’s not a huge leap.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
It’s the best beauty. Something that reveals itself in it’s own time or not at all. Shapes emerging from shadows. Visceral, challenging, creepy, mystical.
