Dark Side of Me is about lifelong struggle with chronic depression desperately fighting off dark thoughts as they creep uninvited into your consciousness. The lyrics are honest and raw, and for anybody who has struggled with their own mental health, self-esteem, or body image. You’ll find a part of yourself gazing back at you from within this song.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where are you now?
I’m in San Francisco, California.
‘DARK SIDE OF ME’ is your triumphant video masterpiece featuring heavy dark Rock guitar, a pounding drum track and topped with an emotional vocal. Tell us all about this production:
I wrote the song with just my vocal and a piano (that’s how I write most of my songs) and brought it to my producer, Jim Kaufman, in Los Angeles. Together with the musicians on the record, we came up with some beautiful heavy riffs to compliment the song’s lyrical intensity. We recorded it live that same week. That gives the instrumentation a raw sound that I love.
You used multiple looks, locations and a live crow! Who was the director?
The director was Myles Erfurth of Stained Glass Eye Entertainment. He loved the concept of the song and immediately had an incredible vision for how to bring it to life focusing on the duality of the mind – the dark side and the light side. I wanted to use a crow in the video because they are an excellent representation of duality: they often have a negative cultural connotation as a bad omen or a symbol of death, yet they are extremely intelligent animals with a wide range of emotions and capabilities that scientists are only just beginning to study and understand. I absolutely adore crows.
Your releasing a full length vinyl soon, a lot of artists are doing this as well. What is it about vinyl that you love?
Vinyl obviously sounds amazing, but I love how it reminds us to slow down and enjoy an album in its entirety. It also gives artists space to showcase the visual aspects of music that is often neglected with streaming and downloads. Album artwork brings deeper meaning to songs and functions as the window through which we experience the music.
I’ll be releasing more singles from the album and I’ll be shooting more videos as well. I’m also working on a unique metal take on a Tori Amos song. I hope to be touring and playing live shows as soon as possible!
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark Beauty is about uniqueness and honesty. It’s about digging through the superficial layers and finding the dark core that lingers within us all.
