Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in Walnut Creek, CA, but I mainly grew up all over the Sacramento area. Currently, I’m based in Sacramento but I do tend to travel all over California for my business as a professional makeup artist.
Is your work all self produced?
Yes, my album is fully self-produced, written, performed and released by myself through my own independent label, FE304 Records.
Tell us about the track Restless:
Restless is a song for the restless, as you could have guessed. Whether or not that’s due to insomnia, or if something is keeping you up troubled at night. I experience both frequently so I decided to write about it to help me sleep. Every time I put on this song, I get sleepy! haha So basically, I created my own remedy when nothing else worked. Especially since I don’t like to take medication. Actually, the main underlying message is my struggle to forgive my father. He’s been in and out of my life for as long as I can remember and even before. This caused me great confusion as to my worth as a child and as an adult, consequently enough, even in all of my relationships. This year my main goal is to learn how to forgive him once and for all, whether or not he ever apologizes.
You experiment with Ambient, what inspired you in this direction?
Funny you should ask… I started creating music when I was 12 years old using a program called Magix Music Maker (does anyone remember that?!) The first song I ever recorded had the sound of water being poured in reverse as a background effect along with piano and some bells and synth orchestra noises. I loved it so much that I kept creating until I had created an ambient electronic album with 12 songs timing 45 minutes by the time I was 15 years old. Unfortunately, I lost all of the tracks due to my first computer dying and not having money to afford fixing it. It was a very big loss for me, but I had to keep on going! I used to create pop music but it felt shallow and I felt hollow. Something just was off for me, personally, so I had to discover a new sound. That’s how I got back to my childhood roots of electronic ambient music. Realizing this was one of my first loves, I was curious what attracts energy and through this study I discovered magnetism, which ended up inspiring my entire shift as an artist in all avenues. Manifo stands for manifestor, or someone or something that manifests something from nothing. It does have a deeper meaning, but that’s for another time.
How does is feel to have your music on Spotify and Bandcamp?
It’s honestly pretty cool to see something I’ve worked so hard on for so long (8 years to be exact… through many delays, loopholes, financial struggles, etc.) FINALLY out there in the open for anyone to hear. Truly, it’s not about fame for me. I just hope to heal and help people and have always loved performing for others. If I do perform this live, expect a lot of dancing and fancy lights!
Oh baby… SO MANY THINGS! I can’t wait to share all the plans I have but for now, I’m actually relieved to have this EP complete so I can move on to the next project! I’m in a duo called Aura Division with Anthony Sarti, and we are planning the release of our first album as well so that is the first main thing in the works. We will be performing as a duo starting in 2020. I may have a few of my own shows here and there as well, but my hope for Manifo is to work on soundtracks for movies.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark Beauty is the manifestation of the shadow side in the most authentic way. For those of us who were born into darkness (I was born at 9:30pm) and for those who are haunted by the past, that tenderness and attention to detail are not easily replicated by those who only know light. Every person I’ve ever met who had a darkness about them had something radiant about them as well. It’s all about how you look at the world around you.
