The blistering glow of downtempo post-industrial beats, electro-pop melodies and layered soundscapes are home to Josie’s captivating lyrics; she is a songwriter in the purest sense. The result is a pulsating sound that will haunt you with vulnerability while basking in Josie’s world of self-reflection and unapologetic rock and roll attitude that Detroit is legendary for. Her song ‘FIRE’ deals with the self-doubt and apprehension that many in the world go through on a daily basis and how it can wear you down to the point where you want to lash out.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in Lapeer Michigan and I currently reside in Clarkston MI. I record all of my music at Plymouth Rock Recording Company in Plymouth MI. That’s where a lot of my team works each day.
How would you describe the music scene your a part of in Detroit?
I feel like the music scene I am a part of in Detroit is being re born in a way. Me and my band always try to go out and support the local music scene. We make it a point to bring the “wow” factor back into live performances and appearances.
Bravo! We love your newest video ‘FIRE’, it has your vibe all over it. A concrete hallway, your band (Synth/Drums) and killer fashion. Who was in charge of filming and the overall look?
I am fortunate enough to have a group of friends that work in the film and entertainment industry who love to help me with production of my music videos. Ken Roberts, my music producer, directs all of my music videos. Ken and I spend weeks working on the concept and style of each video. We are inspired greatly by artists like David Bowie, IAMX, Queen and Nine Inch Nails.
Tell who you are as a music artist and what moment in your life you knew to pursue music:
When I make music, I always put everything I am into it. I want to make each song a masterpiece in multiple ways. I can perform all of my songs on acoustic guitar and they sound totally different from the finished electronic rock versions. I try to write lyrics that can be interpreted in many different ways depending on who the listener is. Everyone has their own way of listening to music. I have known ever since I can remember that I was going to pursue music. My family is full of musicians and both of my parents knew that music would be a huge part of my life from a very young age. I never felt like I could spend my life doing anything else. I started playing the 6 string guitar when I was very young and I’ve been writing and playing ever since.
Are you a 3 piece unit and do you yourself play any instruments live?
When I play live, I perform with Ken Roberts (synths) and Mark Damian (drums). On stage I focus on singing and putting on an exciting and iconic and memorable show. Although I do not play any instruments on the stage with Mark and Ken, I write each of my songs on acoustic guitar and sometimes even release acoustic performances of my songs. I love being able to show people I am a musician at heart and each of my songs can be stripped down to the bare minimum and still sound just as cool as the electronic versions.
Your message to the world:
Just do what makes you happy. Life is too short to constantly be trying to please other people. Be yourself and be unapologetic.
I have a new single coming out in the next month called “Perfect Replacement” with guest vocals by my good friend Sammi Doll from the band IAMX. We will be filming a music video with Sammi for “Perfect Replacement” as well as planning a Fall/ Winter tour.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark Beauty, to me, means to be unconventional, edgy and being yourself no matter what. Be thought provoking and raw in ways that nobody but yourself can.
