This fairly new Dark Synthwave live act caught our attention almost immediately. With super tight musicianship, cinematic sounds scopes and crisp production, Carbon Killer is soon to take on the world by storm on a pirate death ship captained by Blackbeard himself.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
How long has this project been in existence and did you all meet?
I started Carbon Killer as a solo project in early 2017, but turned it into a trio band in May 2018 with the help of Adrien Tisseraud from the electro project Taylorythm and Theo Begue from the metal band Hypno5e.
Tell us who is in your line-up and what instruments do they play:
Adrien is our keyboard player on stage, he also participates in the songwriting process mostly as an arranger and a mixing engineer. On top of that, he was the one coming up with the live setup and the technical solutions that allowed us to bring the project on stage. I also contacted Theo through a common friend to ask him to join the band around April 2018. He’d been playing drums for a very long time in extremely technical metal bands and his current main project is called Hypno5e. So playing the good old four on the floor CK’s pattern is not a big deal for him, he actually was able to learn our complete set in less than a week of rehearsal then went on tour with us just after that. I’m the one playing guitar and I write the tracks.
What music programs are you using in the studio for composition and recording?
We’re using Ableton Live 10, both for live performance and studio recording. We use a lot of VSTs but mostly those from Native Instruments, Arturia, Xfer and U-he.
Your LIVE recording on Bandcamp (Midnight Mass) is very impressive. Where was this recorded and how did you prepare to get it so perfect?
Thanks! We recorded it for the 4th gig with the trio formation at Jalles House Rock 2018 in France, a really nice festival which takes place in July on the south west of the France. Putting the emphasis on the live performance aspect of the project was very important for me from the very beginning. I wanted to produce as quickly as possible some content to show what we’re doing on stage to the world. As I told you before we worked with Theo and Adrien for about a week, did a short 3 concert tour to warm up, then went to this festival with a video crew and shot the live album. Adrien had to deal with a lot of technical issues to create a setup that would let us be able to play AND record the audio of a live performance. Also without crashing or using extremely expensive stuff and in the end everything worked out almost without issues.
Any plans on coming to the US?
You do a cover of Kavinsky’s all time classic track ‘Night Call’, when you end a show with it, how does the crowd react?
Tell us some future plans:
We’re working right now on our debut studio LP, scheduled for early 2020 and we’re going to do a worldwide tour to support its release. We’re also working on a new scenography for the upcoming tour with new costumes, lights and other surprises! Maybe after that we’ll get some sleep. CLICK HERE IF YOU DARE
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
It kind of resonate like Charles Baudelaire’s poem “une charogne (a carcass)” : find beauty even in the darkest, drabbest things.
