Sierra has no desire to hide as she wanders through the valley in the shadow of the strange. Sierra’s self imposed exile has taken her through the winter desert, formerly Paris, on a quest. Born on April 1991 in Paris, Annelise Morel is a musician better known under the pen name SIERRA. At 18 years old she decided she wanted to save and purchase a synthesizer, after years of jamming with acoustic sorts. Influenced by EBM, industrial techno, French touch AKA Tekfunk, Darkwave, and Sci-fi soundtracks, she also collaborates with The Toxic Avenger on a side project that will be out really soon. All have honed the sounds you will experience when listening to Sierra’s musical offerings.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in a small city near Paris. Then I lived in Brittany, Spain, Mexico and now I am back in Paris since 4 years.
What year was the most important for you as an artist?
My year the most important was 2016. I was almost giving up music because I was a bit lost in what I wanted to compose, and I was planning to start a totally new professional career. But my friends pushed me to apply to an international music contest organized by SEAT. I sent a song I composed with a ukulele (nothing linked with electronic music) and I received an unexpected call from SEAT telling me that I was selected by another French artist (DJ THE AVENER) to go to Berlin for the finale of the music production competition. In Berlin there were 20 musicians selected OVER 2500 people, we had 48hrs to compose the music of a SEAT advertising. I did not win the finale but that weekend was amazing and motivated me to continue music. When I came back to Paris I stopped what I was doing, took classes for music production and started to compose my first EP Strange Valley.
Tell us about your new EP:
I wanted to make this EP different from my last one. This time I did not want a universe fantastic like Strange Valley. This time my influences are not really synthwave but more cinematic music mixed with EBM, of course with a retro and analog touch. When I composed the EP I imagined all the time a story like a dark thriller movie about anger, revenge and deliverance. I imagined an atmosphere violent but also really melancholic.
What else would you like to share with our readers?
Well, that I really hope they will like my new EP GONE. I composed it with all my heart. The 5 tracks are really different: Some are violent, some are really calm… So have a look!
I just finished a remix for BROOK LINE that will be out with Mouton Noir Records. I am also working on a collaboration with the techno DJ Hippo. I also composed the music of a small short movie that will be out soon. I also just finished an EP for another project that I will run in parallel of SIERRA. This EP has been done with The toxic avenger on Enchanté Records.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark beauty is what inspires me the most. There is something strong about anger or sadness that I always want to talk about in my tracks. When I am at home I love to listen to happy music but when I write music I love to tell stories, and honestly happy stories are not really the most interesting to tell..
