Breathe. This isn’t the end. Absolute Valentine is back, and he’s here to take down the Corp. After orchestrating the murder of his one and only love, as a way of forcing him off the streets, Omega Corp has taken almost complete control, filling our city with the heavy beat of bad power. No one can avoid the technological claw that is squeezing us of every last drop of free existence. Born on May 8th, 1979 in Marseille, Johann is a musician better known under the pen name Absolute Valentine. Since 2014, he creates tracks influenced by electronic music, the 80’s aesthetics and the cyberpunk genre. Nowadays, we call this genre Synthwave, Retro-Electro and sometimes Darksynth.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where are you right now?
Right now, I’m in my studio in Marseille, France.
Congrats on the new amazing ten track album OMEGA! I just got done listening and I can say it’s some of your best work. How are you feeling about the new release?
Thanks a lot for the compliment! I’m really proud about this new album, it’s like a new start to me even if it’s called Omega, I used to get this sentence in mind each time I was producing new tracks: “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” In this album, I wanted to break the Synthwave code as I didn’t want to repeat myself.
What’s different about this release compared to your last?
For sure, Omega is more mature. I have tried to give an apocalyptic vision to this album. You will be able to hear a full spectrum of emotions. Light to Dark. Compared to Police Heartbreaker, Omega is angrier but at the same time more melodic.
What are your primary Synthesizers used on the new album?
I tend to use software synthesizers as I love to work in a kind of all in the box. I’m not always in my studio to create music but I have used the Moog Sub Phatty and my Arturia Mini Brute.
Who is the singer on ‘The Impossible’ and how did you come together to do the track?
I will not mention her name as she wants to stay anonymous but what I can say, I have tweaked her voice to make her “Impossible” to recognize.
Tell us some adventures about your last tour:
My last USA tour was amazing, we lived so much adventure with my brother in hand “Waveshaper”. One of my funniest moments was when a fan asked me to sign her vinyl with a big dick! So I had to draw it. Also, the Neon Retro Fest was super amazing, I have been able to meet a lot of American Synthwavers and they have been amazing.
More Absolute Valentine’s vinyl will be available, I’m also working on more collaborations so stay tuned.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark Beauty represents the full range of the dark art! Photos selections are top notch and all subjects are amazing. A big big thank you for your interview.
