Our friend POMPOM has been busy in the studio producing and engineering the new project GIRLFIEND. One can say there’s a vibe of real dark Grunge along the lines of Hole, Marylin Manson, and Babes in Toyland. Their sound lives in a dark space that is at once luscious, grimey, jagged, and beautiful. The lyrics often evoke sadness, angst, and violence, but have catharsis as their ultimate goal. Girlfiend is creating Queer Girl Band music that is as revolutionary as it is contagiously listenable.
Their debut single, Garden of Ache is a dark, infectious example of all they stand for, artistically, socially, and musically. Now for their double track release, Girlfiend brings us “Wheelbarrow” – A song about feeling taken advantage of by the one you love and feeling safe in your lovers arms, but at the same time feeling like the love is one sided. The second song is a simple melancholic rendition of Nicole Dollanganger’s ‘Rabid’.
The LA-based post-punk/alternative Rock band Girlfiend is comprised of Singer/Songwriter Comet (Tristan Candler), Lead Guitarist Angelica Cox, Drummer Baby (Olivia Gonzales), and Bassist Violet Migel with Producer POMPOM (Audrey Bagley) on the production. Lead Vocalist Comet, a fixture in the LA Drag scene, has channeled ‘90s alt. Rock and the Riot Grrrl movement + sound, mixed with a bit of Comet’s own demonic/vampiric elven aesthetic. Girlfiend is an ideal mix of their love of performance art and dirty rock and roll.
