Toronto synth-pop trio Parallels released their third album “Metropolis” in just a year ago in 2017. NME described front-woman, Holly Dodson’s vocals as “A young Madonna meets modern electro”. Parallels can be heard on the soundtrack of Oscar winning short-film “Curfew” which features their song “Dry Blood”. The band has toured extensively supporting artists such as Florence and The Machine, YELLE, Timecop1983, Miami Horror and Glass Candy.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born and raised in Toronto and still live here for the time being although California is calling.
Is there a strong music scene in Toronto?
There’s definitely a ton of music history in Toronto but the city’s gone through some big changes and many artists have been priced out of living here. It’s a great place to be to see touring acts because usually everyone makes a stop. There’s a little group of us synth artists here who we’ve loved connecting with so we’re hoping to play more parties together and try to bring more synth people together.
How long have you being involved in music and what was the moment that started it all?
I started writing in secret when I was 16 – I was a very shy kid but wrote a bunch of songs for my first solo album called “The Carousel”. So I learned a bit about production and engineering to get my ideas out. Before that though, my Dad was in a 70’s classic rock band that reunited in 1992, I was 6. They did a Canada-wide tour that summer and brought all the kids along so I got to join them on that. I think that summer would be “the moment”.
What brought you and Synthwave artist NINA together for this upcoming tour?
We played a show together in London this past spring so the seeds were planted then. They’ve been incredible to work with and of course, we’re huge fans of their music.
What can fans expect to see during your live show?
Expect to dance <3
I see your performing at Turbo Drive in San Francisco Friday November 16th, have you ever been?
Yes! So excited for Turbo Drive – I’ve never been but have heard so much about it. We played DNA Lounge a few years ago, and it was definitely a highlight of that tour. San Francisco is one of my favorite cities. CLICK ON FLYER
How exciting is it to watch the Synthwave scene growing throughout the world?
It’s incredibly exciting to see such a love for synth music, it’s truly inspiring and I love that it’s bridging people who lived through the 80’s and those who love that era and are maybe just discovering it.
Are there other musicians involved in this project?
Onstage I’ll be joined by keyboardist Oliver Blair who also does a project called Radio Wolf. When we tour with a drummer it’s usually my brother Nick Dodson.
What would you like to share with our readers?
If you want to find us online, we’re @iloveparallels on Twitter and Instagram.
After this tour, new music. I’ve been collaborating with Futurecop! so there’s a new single coming out by the end of this year on New Retrowave.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Summer moons and daydreaming at midnight.
