Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in Santa Cruz, CA and I am currently still living there.
How did you discover your musical talent?
Hmm. Honestly, I forget. I know I was little when I realized I could sing. I spent a lot of time listening to my parent’s old records. My dad would play Sade and Fleetwood Mac CDs in the car on the way to school, and I would sing along to the songs I liked. I begged my mom to buy me a cheap guitar when I was around the age of five, and I started to write my own songs. The songs weren’t very lyrically complex, though, and at the time I couldn’t play anything aside from a couple of notes on the first string of the guitar, but I knew I loved making music. I would create these short jingles and melodies and record them with my dad’s video camera.
What instruments do you play?
I play the guitar.
Tell us a bit about the production of your music video WILD ONES:
Sure, my friends shot it for me. They have a production company/magazine called Respect the Funk. My friend Gabe directed the music video and the plot’s pretty twisted. It’s about narcissism. I don’t want to give away the ending for those who haven’t seen it, but it’s pretty cool. He did a great job directing the video. Everyone involved in making it deserves a medal. They’re all super talented.
What producer did you collaborate with on WILD ONES?
My friend Ross Ryan created the instrumental track. I showed him the original version of the song I had made with my guitar and he helped me restructure it quite a bit. Then he came up with the electronic track and we got all the recording done in a day.
Describe your personal style:
Oooh, groovy chic? Retro weird? I have these crazy 7 inch platforms that never seem to come off my feet. I think they’ve become an extension of myself. I usually wear those shoes whenever I go out and I’ll pair it with a maxi dress and a fur coat. I guess that’s my “signature look.” Hahaha.
I’ll be going on Ross’s mini tour this fall. He produces his own music under the name STAYLOOSE and I’ll be singing some songs for him. You can see us LIVE in San Francisco Friday October 12th at club 1015 Folsom (click on flyer below). I have music that I’m hoping to release soon, so be on the lookout for that. A lot of new features, as well as more originals.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Vamp-y seduction. When something is so beautiful it becomes deadly.
