All the members of Creux Lies used to be part of a support group for people with the 6th Sense. Now, they spend their days loungin in Sacramento, CA along w/ ghosts and other ultra-dimensional beings… just playing music together, and getting cozy. Revered for use of reverb-laden guitar work, creative synth structures, and dynamic vocals akin to the style of many early shades of 80’s pop darkness, Creux Lies are known as an alternative / post-punk / new romantic-esq project from Sacramento, California. Created out of the band formerly known as NMBRSTTN, singer Ean Clevenger, guitarist Barry Crider, synth/electronics David Wright, drummer Topher Snyder, and bassist Kyle Vorst have focused their creative vision toward a new path of electro-drenched melancholy sonic styling. Following the release of their full length album THE HEARTH, Creux Lies now presents us with the music video for “Portals”, the first single from the album and a fan favorite. The video is a whirlwind of conspicuous scenes focusing mainly on a pair of enigmatic masked men and their would-be prey. The inscrutable masks worn by the “villains”, the smiles, the murder and the trickery all have essential roles in the story this video recounts. The scenes dim and flash while wild animals are on the hunt, adding a darker, macabre, and metaphoric touch to the film. Throughout, we catch glimpses of vocalist Ean Clevenger performing the track, in step through the alleyways encircling this tale; midst mysterious cameos of the rest of Creux Lies throughout the film.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
We are all of the Californian sun. We are all children of this sun-drenched, movies star-filled and Pacific ocean kissed state of the US. We all ended up living here via sexual prowess of our parents and the magnetism of the capital city, Sacramento.
Tell us a bit of the history about the band:
Barry and Ean grew tired of compromising the sound they’ve been looking for. With a leap of faith, and the chance encounter of the hunky/brilliant David, Kyle, and Topher, they were finally able to capture the dream sound fully. We all met through total happenstances and quandaries, not one of us was a childhood friend, but somehow, we all are now true brothers of music and life.
Describe your musical style:
We have many obvious leanings, post-punk, some darkwave additives, a tone from The Cure, a synth string from Depeche Mode, but, a lot of my background comes from playing in dark, heavy hardcore/punk bands. I think it’s that depravity that birthed the rich and levity of our, at times almost pop sound. We love the New Romantic sound, but the fashion isn’t us. Between the California in me, the shorts I rock on stage, the hugs and high fives, the endless glasses of Pinot Noir, it just ends up being something like, I don’t know, Party Goth.
Who are the members and what are their musical roles?
Barry Crider – he plays the Fenders. Yes, almost exclusively, beautiful, crafted, vintage, and modified Fenders.
Kyle Vorst is on bass. Kyle is also a connoisseur of interesting guitars. One of his favorites and mine is the Roland G-77.
David Wright is the brainstem of our operation; he is the synth and tech master. A programmer and drummer by trade, he keeps the whole set, synths, and beat alive with his beautiful mind, all the while our dedicated and glorious former drummer Topher Snyder heads into the beauty off fatherhood.
Ean – Vocals, hand levitator, song-seamstress, word burglar.
What can people expect to see during a live performance?
Lights, fog, hugs, dancing, shorts, wine, and no bullshit.
We just wrapped a video for our first single, “Portals.” We are about to shoot our second video for our second single off “The Hearth,” called, “Eulogy.” We have some touring coming up, including some shows with our friends in Glaare and Actors, and we are planning a tour of Europe in Summer 2019. Also, we started writing our second album, and are prepping a fully loaded dance EP to be released prior.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
As a media outlet, “Dark Beauty” captures the very best of visual and audio elements of the deepest, and perhaps the most alluring, of the human experience. As for the concept of dark beauty itself, it shows the truth… that beauty isn’t all about joy, frills, and pretension; instead, beauty is life itself surviving in the vast of dark nothingness. If we can not only exist in darkness but find the gift of life within, then perhaps we can see our purpose without the illusion of happiness as the root of our existence, and mold our reality into a life worth living.
