From the NJ/NYC’s Underground Music Scene comes Xentrifuge, a brutal assault of harsh Industrial/Dark Electro, constructed by the collectively innovative minds of Chris X and Lisa Hellen. They bring a groundbreaking blend of Industrial-based sound, fused with noise, and a touch of heavy guitar work to create a hauntingly melodic, yet raw and unforgiving product.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
When was the project born and where are you now?
ChrisX: Xentrifuge was originally born in Northern New Jersey 2005, where we were both born and raised. After 2 successful LP’s on Noitekk, Xentrifuge was reborn in 2012 with Lisa Hellen bringing her skills into the studio and on stage, finally bringing my vision of Xentrifuge back to life.
Lisa Hellen: In 2016 we released our first collective effort “Machine Winter” as a single; with such great feedback, we went full on and here we are today with our latest release “Desensitized Parallels” on Cleopatra Records.
To create your sound what elements are you using in the studio?
Chris X: I’ve always been quite fond of combining the hardware aspect with software to maximize possibilities. To be more specific, on our newest release we used a bit more outside elements than in previous works such as some guitar work, Lisa on some vocal work, and also a bit more hardware driven synthesis.
Lisa Hellen: I have become very fond of Novation synthesizers and plugins while writing, we already have some new material in the works and I look forward to delving further into some more hardware synthesis.
From the beginning till now, what have you learned as artists?
Lisa Hellen: I’ve learned to follow your intuition – don’t let others dictate what you can and cannot do as an artist and as a person. Find someone who recognizes your energy and believes in you the same as you believe in them.
Chris X: While I totally agree with Lisa, I’ve also learned to stand up for what want to convey without compromise. If we can’t give our all, it’s incredibly frustrating. We owe that to our fans and ourselves as we work very hard to do so.
Tell us a bit about your video ‘Circles of Dust’:
“Circles of Dust” is about finding your own path, whatever it may be. This video focuses on that aspect through a dark ritualistic type process, invoking the energy into our world. There is much to the story, it needs to be watched a few times for one to really absorb everything that is occurring. The video itself portrays a small group entranced in a ritual to reach through to a new dimension- in which we are performing. It was a lot of fun to be able to bring visuals to this song and we will doing it again very soon, be on the lookout!
Are you your own stylists or do you have a team behind your look?
Lisa Hellen: For our live performances, we are our own stylists, head to toe. We try to give our fans what the music would look like if it were in visual form. For the music video, I was the creative director behind wardrobe, makeup and hair. We did have a team to execute all of this, they were great, very talented artists.
Chris X: I think image is a sometimes under-rated aspect that a lot of bands overlook. It’s very important to show that not only do you care how your music sounds, but you care how you want it to be presented. Plus it’s fun to go out shopping together and build our Xentrifuge wardrobe, as we share a lot of clothes, lol.
Your added to the Adoration Destroyed tour, very exciting. What we expect to see on this tour?
This tour we plan to bring a new live element to the stage, which we believe the fans are going to enjoy. We are always in the studio upgrading our stage production. We really want to give the fans a bang for their buck with high energy, cool visuals, and all around brutal assault of electro-industrial. We’re very happy to be a part of this tour. We’re also fans and label mates with Adoration Destroyed; Fires is a kickass project and we can’t wait to get on the road and raise some hell with both bands.

With that being said, be on the lookout for additional dates throughout the year for Xentrifuge in a city near you.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark Beauty to us means looking at the world in an abstract and alternate way than the mainstream. Being able to find beauty in the darkness and bleakness of the world where most find disgust. Everything has beauty if you know how to look hard enough.
