Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in Perth, Western Australia. I’m currently on my bed in Newtown, Sydney.
How long has this project been in existence and how did you meet?
The project, as a 2 piece has existed for 3 years. We met through one of those chance moments. Kat ran into an old friend at a festival who had recently met Laura. He saw similarities in our personalities that he describes as being ‘dark birds’ so he strongly suggested we make music together. I think that pricked up both our ears and of course it worked out.
We’re in love with your sound, it’s a beautiful mix of organic, analogue and electronic. When did you know you got this formula right?
That means a lot, thank you. I don’t think a creative formula should ever be considered perfect, it’s certainly something to strive for but we never want to stop exploring what it could be. We are always growing, changing and are influenced by different things.
The music of Mezko has a retro electro vibe yet refreshing as well as new and needed in the music world today. Where do you wish to be in one year?
It is such an interesting time in music, we certainly don’t fit in anywhere. It’s nice to be free to float around the different genres/scenes of Australia and slide into an electronic or band based lineup. However it would be nice in a year or so to have somewhere in the world that we find our own mishmash collective and to be more known/understood for what we create.
What are the pros and cons in being a duo musical group?
I’ll start with the cons. We have a lot of gear. Like a lot… Synths, guitars, pads, laptops and it’s just the two of us. Australia is huge, it isn’t like driving 5 hours from one awesome city to the next, you have to fly. It can be exhausting. However, it’s also a pro… We can fit the entire band in any small shitbox car and we’re good to go. Also, way more importantly, collaborating is so great, we help each other not just with our music but our lives as well. We’re more than sisters/friends… we’re our own entity that is MEZKO.
Has music changed your lives?
Of course. I think we both made the music decision so young we defined ourselves by it. Definitely something we instantly bonded over.
What instruments are you using during a live performance?
I use an MS20 that I run through a swollen pickle, play bass straight through a sans amp, it works better with our sound not to be competing with the subs so it blends way better. Kat has her Microkorg, Native Instruments Maschine, guitar and runs the beats.
Music videos can go really good or really bad, you make it look so effortless and cool. Are there a number of directors involved in these productions?
The last video was so much fun to make, it was effortless and wonderful working with director Ellen Hodgson. She’s actually also American/Australian so look out for more of her work.
Could you let our readers know what topics you touch on in your lyrics?
We work individually on wording our own mind’s eye. Lately I have grown towards imagery and story telling, the concept of loss, a song from the heart tends to be dark and a little melancholic. That being said we have a handful of super cheeky/audacious songs. Both these vibes will be on our EP ‘Come & Go’.
When can we expect you in the United States?
Next year! Very excited.
Pet Sounds – Beach Boys
On the Beach – Neil Young
Before and After Science – Brian Eno
XTRMNTR – Primal Scream
Dehinter Das Gesicht – Schwefelgelb
Maggot Brain – Funkadelic
Bad Blood – Gerling
Histoire de Melody Nelson – Serge Gainsbourg
Suspiria – Goblin
Crying – Roy Orbison
Our EP will be out during American Summer, our winter. Really looking forward to this, we’re very proud of where it has come to, for me – especially the b sides. We will then be finishing our album which will be the same time as heading to the states.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
