For All The Emptiness originally started as an idea by vocalist/composer Jonathan Kaplan. After viewing Apoptygma Berzerk’s live DVD APBL98 and seeing front man Stephan Groth go into the crowd after a performance and how much their music affected them, it showed how much art can make the world a better place. Jonathan took his passion for truth, science, logic, and critical thinking and based their music around those principles.
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in Cedar City, Utah and now reside just north of Toronto.
Tell us about your love affair with dark electronic music:
My love affair with dark electronic music began years ago with Vnv Nation’s Empires and Apop’s Welcome To Earth. For the longest time I detested electronic music because of how shallow and simple it was. When I was introduced to modern synthpop/industrial my eyes were opened, electronic music could be complex and deep.
How was the band born?
The band was born many years ago as an idea. Many members came and left as we were experimenting with music technology. A few years back decided to take the project more seriously and ended up releasing a couple cds and performing as often as possible.
Do you feel the Goth/Industrial scene is fading away?
Like any scene there are cycles, back in the 90s and 2000s there was a nice peak. There was a decline for a while in popularity, however I believe the scene will always exist in some form. Goth/Industrial will always change, it gains popularity and loses popularity.
What would you like to see more of in that scene?
I would love to see more interesting live performances, to see more artistic risks and unique acts. On top of this I would love to see the scene in North America become popular enough so that it is viable for small bands to tour.
‘Seduced By A Disease’, where was this shot and how many people were involved?
The video was shot at a place called the Sharon Temple. There were a number of crew members, pre/post production people, as well as the actors. In the video itself there are two actors, and 3 musicians.
What message do you wish to send with your music?
There are many messages the music sends, many songs have different messages. In general I would like my music to relay the importance of critical thinking and reason. I want to send the message that although there are no gods, no souls, no spirits and no afterlives, life is still amazing and beautiful. Being good to each other is a goal within itself.
Favorite synth?
Virtuoso 2000 or Access Virus.
Top 3 favorite artists?
This list changes daily, but right now I would say Neuroticfish, Iron Maiden and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
What tools are you using in the recording studio?
Usually we have a couple dozen hardware synths, a microphone, Cubase, a number of various vsts, engineers and musicians. We use all of these tools.
What’s in you ipod?
I have music from synth pop, industrial, pop, heavy metal, rock, musical theater and a number of other electronic and non electronic genres.
Future plans?
In the near future we are working on another video as well as releasing a remix version of Mt Ep. Looking further into the future we will be releasing a new full length album and hopefully lock down another tour or two.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
There is beauty in everything, even in things that people are afraid of.
