Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where do you reside now?
I was born in a small town outside of Austin. I grew up mostly in Northern California (HELLA), but now I’ve been a resident of Los Angeles for almost 10 years.
What instrument is your weapon of choice?
Throughout the years, I’ve learned to play piano, guitar, bass, and drums, but most of my professional career as a musician has been wielding an axe.
What music project are you involved in:
Currently, I’m playing for the band Nylon Pink as the lead guitarist and vocalist.
Let’s start with your female pop rock band Nylon Pink, describe to our readers the beginnings of this amazing group and update us to the present:
The band originally started with Kaila Yu and Katt Lee as the original members of the band. I joined up in 2010 since at the time I was modeling more often. Nylon Pink had a Harajuku inspired jewelry line called Hello Drama, and I did a few shots for their new collection. They found out I played guitar and invited me on board, which was aaaawweesome! Since then, we worked our way up, writing our own original music, which can pretty much be described as “Hello Kitty on acid.” Since we were fans of KPOP, we started doing covers of KPOP music in English and with a heavier twist. This gave us the opportunity to build a fan base world wide. The band is slowing down now, and we’re working on a new project with Nylon Pink that will be released in the beginning of 2017.
We interviewed your group She Demons which is now named Hellfire Heart not long ago. Why the name change?
Well, to make a long story short, we just liked the name Hellfire Heart better.
We’d love to hear about your experience playing on stage with Taylor Swift at the 2014 MTV VMA’s:
I wasn’t really a huge fan of Taylor Swift prior to my gig. In fact, I just really didn’t listen to many of her songs. After my first rehearsal with her, I realized she’s extremely charming and kind hearted. She baked us all cookies on our second rehearsal (and there were about 100 people on set if you’ve seen the video). The stage was unbelievably huge and jaw dropping. You couldn’t really focus on the cameras because there were so many lights. It was out of this world!
Other than music what are some of your other passions?
FOOOOOOD! I friggin love food… like to the point where it is far beyond a bad habit.
Where can we find Kiki on a night out in Hollywood?
I spent far too many evenings at Loaded as some of you may know.
Describe your personal style and what you like to wear:
It’s kind of strange and flip flops all the time. When I’m on stage, I love anything with spikes and high collars. Leather, metal shit, you know… basically anything that would fly on the set of a Dimmu Borgir music video. At home I have this gigantic shirt that says “I NEED COFFEE” in all caps. When my mom came to visit me, she bought me the shirt, then bought two as gifts for her friends. She ended up leaving them all at my apartment, so now I have three of them… and that’s pretty much all I wear around the house.
Best moment of your life?
Playing on stage at San Francisco Pride with over 2 million attendees. You’d look out and there was just a never-ending sea of humans. It was awesome.
What’s in your iPod?
A whole lot of death metal and thrash: The Haunted, Lamb of God, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, At the Gates, etc… Dubstep, electro, and also classical piano.
Tell us your future plans you have coming up:
We have some secret things ah brewing with Nylon Pink… stay tuned since we’ll be releasing it in the beginning of 2017.
