Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
Well, I was born in Hayward California and when I lay my head to rest, it’s Brentwood California that I call home. I’m a Cali girl through and through, a Bay Area babe, born and bred!
You fuse rock, funk, hip-hop, metal with a sprinkle of bad ass led by your self a powerful front woman. The live musical lineup are such pros, how long did it take you to get to this stage in your lineup?
You know like any great recipe it takes time and tweaking things right to get the best flavor out of your dish and with that being said I’ve been honing my craft and collecting the right players to make the perfect gumbo! I’ve been blessed to have the most amazing team of musicians which I’ve named most affectionately and appropriately, ” The PAIN! “
I noticed your private jet, very amazing! How did this come about and when can we come on board?
Ummm, right now it’s in the shop, LOL! Working on a fleet of hot air balloons, going retro! I have too much equipment for the unicorns to carry! Ha!
Tell us some details about the making of your video ‘Put Em Up’ also who was the director:
We shot three videos in four days in LA, “Put Em Up” was one of them. It was crazy, hot, exciting and sort of a blur! It was awesome to be able to express myself visually as well as vocally! The director, Cam and his production team were wonderful!Gems in their field! Since then they are part of the Temper circus, I mean family!
All I have to say for the ‘M.L.M’ (the Recipe) music video is fuck yeah! Your vision really resonates strongly with this track sonically and visually. Shirlee you are the real deal, the industry is ready for a punch in the face. What would you like your role in the music industry to be?
Wow what an intro to a question! That was so straightforward and a kick ass compliment, thank you! As for my role in the music industry, I just want to bring back the meat and potatoes! I don’t know any other way to answer that. I just want to be able to show people a good time and help them make a memory that they can relate to. So, when they feel like crap they got a place through my sound that they can go to in their mind and heart and forget about all the drama they dealt with that day! Ya know, give them a happy place. A place where they can let go, relax or get charged and even just get down, whatever lets them feel good and release and reconnect in a positive way! So I don’t know if that means my role is writing, performing, producing or Hell, even caring the equipment, LOL I’m not too cool for school! I just wanna keep it real!
What other genres a music today would you like to experiment with?
Well, let’s just say I got a box full of spoons and if we were at Baskin-Robbins there’d be a long line to get helped, because I’m going to sample every flavor. I love all kinds of music! Music to me is Colors, scenery, moods and moments captured in the unique combination of sounds. I want to travel everywhere and feel everything that these notes and rhythms and beats will take me. I consider myself an everlasting student of sound!
What pisses you off about the music industry today?
There’s too much over-the-top neon sex sales, lol! OK, let me explain. There are so many talented artists out there that for whatever reason are getting raunchy! Honestly, it makes me feel uncomfortable when I watch what’s going on, and all I’m trying to do is listen to the music. It’s distracting and disturbing but hey, everyone is different, it’s just not for me and that’s OK! And like my mama always said, “Shake what God gave you”, just not in my face, lol!
Tell our readers about your best live performance; where, what and why?
I recently did a festival on the Fourth of July and both my parents were there, which was amazing because they have never seen me perform live.
How about a positive message for our younger female readers:
You know it is so crazy to me when somebody asks you a question like this. It’s heavy, because you think, man if somebody’s actually interested in what you have to say and taking time out of their day just to know what’s on your mind, then you better think about the words that are coming out of your mouth, especially if there impressionable minds. So, what I have to say is this, and it may sound corny, but it is the truth in root. Follow your heart, find what you are good at, hone it and sustain yourself in it! What I mean by this is, if you can live your life the way that you want to live it by doing what you love to do as a service or a good, what ever may be your true calling, then do it! There is no shame in it! Be good at what you do! We all have to work in this life and this is your contribution! It is your right to be happy! Be true to you and that’s the key to happiness!Take, give, accept, sacrifice, demand, do or not do, whatever, just make sure it’s always with all of your heart because you have to live with yourself, no one else does! So you better like yourself, LOL! “Live like a lion, love like a lamb!”
What’s your relationship like with Los Angeles?
Well, we are dating and taking it at our own pace! I’m not sure what the future holds, but I can tell you we are having fun and I definitely feel the connection and electricity there!
What’s in your iPod?
Umm, if you find it please let me know! I’ve been looking for it for about two weeks, LOL! Seriously though, it has everything and anything you could think of, and probably nothing you think would be on it! My style is very Eclectic and so are my musical tastes.
