Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born?
I was born in Berkeley California, right across the Bay Bridge.
Tell our readers a bit more about where you grew up:
My family moved around a lot here in the bay area, we moved to San Francisco when I was in grade school and we moved up north to Gold Country for a few years. Though we bounced around quite a bit we always ended up back here in the bay.
What was the spark that made you buy your very first record, place it on the turntable and begin learning the craft?
I’d have to say it was probably Goldie’s “Timeless”. The first time I heard that I was hooked, the funny thing is my mom bought it first!
When did you start having your earlier events and what were they like?
Well my very first event was when I was underage and started hosting a show with Meikee Magnetic at the Paradise Lounge ;) Since then I’ve produced various underground and club music events in the bay since around 1998. I’ve always focused on the darker heavier style of bass music from the early days of drum and bass and then from Dub-step and now Trap.
Explain Trap Music, how it was born, when did it surface and how did you take hold of it:
(Real) Trap Music was born in the South and given the name by rappers who spent real time in the trap and it was known for its hard dirty lyrics, certain double and triple time hi-hats and other elements you now here in todays EDM type trap music. It’s almost like a whole new animal compared to back then. New school Edm Trap music is super “Ravey” in comparison, incorporating many elements of different styles of dance music and sort of going all over the board in terms of bpm range and musical style. I was always incorporating rap into my sets and the more popular Trap became, the easier it was for me to start collecting more of the music that I had been attracted to for a long time.

You’ve hosted such artists as Heroes x Villains, Baauer, gLAdiator, UZ, Valentino Khan, TWRK and Trap-A-holics. What was the turning point when Trap City took off?
Id say Id have to give a huge amount of credit to our first venue, F8 (aka 1192 Folsom). They were supporting us since day 1 and with the help of that the party it sort of took off from the first one. I think when we had our first dancer tryouts is sort of when our party went from fun to crazy.
Congrats on winning SF Bay Guardian’s Readers Choice BEST DJ OF 2013, any other awards you have your eye on?
Thank you! That was a huge surprise and honor, it felt really awesome to get that award, I <3 U SF! If I have my eye on any award I would love for us to win “Best Party” or “Best Club Night” though there are so many awesome events in SF I know its hard for people to choose.
What can people expect at a Trap City event?
Shenanigans. Also world class DJs and local favorites at the top of their game at some of the best venues in the Bay Area.
You also do graphic design and photography, tell us about that:
Both of those things started out as a hobby for me and something to do for fun (just like DJing) but as the years progressed people have wanted to hire me. I’ve won some awards so its always cool to be recognized for something that is your passion. I do all the graphics for our shows and its always pretty neat to see your visions come to life and be distributed to a large scale audience.
Tell us something more personal about you that people may not know:
I love video games, they are my favorite stress reliever. My favorite thing is having a weekend night off and gaming my face off.
Have your dreams come true? What are some of your new dreams?
A lot of my dreams have come true, the outcome is not always what I expected but I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Some of my new dreams consist of me sitting on a beach drinking rum for a couple months. Outside of traveling for gigs I never get to take a vacation.
What’s next for UltraViolet?
I’ve got a lot of projects in the works. We’re working on a small street wear line (who isn’t) and we also have even larger productions in the works as we move towards the future. Very excited to announce Friday July 10th is The TRAP CITY 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY at 1015 Folsom! CLICK HERE FOR INFO
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
To me Dark Beauty stands for some of the best and most imaginative artists in their field right now. Savage, Glamour and Provocative are three words that come to mind.
