After what’s been undoubtedly a great year for M.A.D.E.S with his ‘Nightkiller’ single and video being selected as the best Synthwave single and video of 2017 by a number of blogs, his debut album ‘Motor’ is finally here. Dark Beauty had the chance to go one on one with him…
Interview Meikee Magnetic
Where were you born and where are you now?
I was born in Lille, at the north of Paris. I live in Lille.
What artists did you listen to while growing up in France?
I listened to a lot of rock, metal music during my youth (Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park, Audioslave, etc). After that I started listening a lot to movie soundtracks (Hans Zimmer, Klaus Badelt, John Powell, James Horner, Alexandre Desplatand to name a few) among others styles/genres.
Synthwave, Retrowave, Vaporware – what category do you fall under?
It’s difficult for me to categorize my music, but currently I would say I’m somewhere between a Synthwave Darksynth mood and sound with the earlier Outrun days always being a major influence to me.
What got your attention to produce this style of music?
At the time, I was already listening to Kavinsky and sometimes Giorgio Moroder. I was absolutely hooked when I watched “Drive” at the cinema. The track “Nightcall” opened the movie and it was a big wake up call for me. It was at that moment that I slowly started to create some Synthwave, Retrowave stuff and started focusing more on those particular styles of Electronic music.
Your production is very professional and clean, did you go to audio school?
No music school for me. I started producing Electronic music alone in my room when I was 14. I started to play guitar at that time and it was a dream come true. My first guitar was a black Peavey Raptor. After that, I started a metal band with my friends in high school. We were playing in our friend’s garage, it was a nice period. It was around 2010/11 that I started producing Electronic music more seriously and exclusively.
In your music studio during recording, what tools do you feel work the best for you?
I’m using Ableton Live and some VSTs to compose my music. I have a PC for composing and a McBook Pro for the live stuff. I use two midi keyboards and usually spend a lot of time on my keyboards trying to find the “perfect” melodies.
Congrats on your new LP ‘Motor’! How’s the response been so far?
The feedback is very positive so far and that motivates me even more to start working on the follow up album.
Who are some Synthwave artists that have your attention?
I really like Perturbator and Carpenter Brut for the “dark side”. I also listen to a lot of DANGER, Pylot, Power Glove, Waveshaper, The Toxic Avenger and Absolute Valentine (among others).
Where in the United States would you like to perform live?
I would love to play in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York (I really love this city!) Then again the world is a big place so I’m open to seeing more places and playing anywhere really.
I’m currently working on my next album and I am pretty happy how it’s advancing so far. Although it’s a bit early to say more about a possible release.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
Dark Beauty and dark feelings are important elements of real everyday life. They sometimes inspire us and make us stronger too so they can’t be ignored.
