Give us the beginner’s guide to Satine, where were you born, where have you lived and where do you reside now?
Born in the Philippines May 22, 1980, raised in Northern California. Went to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco 1998-2002 studying 3D/2D animation, then sculpture and stop motion Animation only to settle on illustration as I felt it was a good foundation for all of the storytelling mediums. Aside from a brief residence in Sydney Australia, I’ve been in LA since 2006.
The phrase “Phoenix Rising from the Flames” is so fitting for you at this time of your life. You’ve recently been in a car crash and given a new outlook on life. Please go deeper on how this has changed you:
I found the name Phoenix on a mountain top in China in 2004. It just fit. I’m always going through an evolution of some sort, it’s how I exist. The biggest change was from my modeling career back to my art career. The lifestyles are so totally different. It was a hard one, but a separation and change I felt I needed to make. Then a week before accomplishing the dream of my first comic at Wondercon, my boyfriend and I got in a major freeway accident. I avoided a head on collision in front of me only to be hit from behind by another car. I got a severe concussion and hand fracture. Amongst other injuries. I couldn’t function for days and was afraid of how intense Wondercon would be as even going to a coffee shop was too intense. Nothing aside from actually dying could have stopped me from going to Wondercon and I was very dizzy and overwhelmed but the happiness in my heart kept me going. Years of meditating, finding my center and breathing. Lots of breathing. Today I can have casual conversations but i’m in the scariest part of my life. I can’t visualize in my mind, can’t create and can’t calculate. It’s been a month since my accident, probably the longest time i’ve gone without drawing. I’m learning patience and surrendering, It’s a trip. Now I have this realization that you only get one chance to exist so just be yourself. I don’t need to hide the model version of me. I can be an artist and an actress. My maturity has given me patience and drive and now I have the boundaries and discipline to accomplish anything I dream.
Your the co creator of the NEW 27 Issue graphic novel NEW PRAETORIANS, this is so exciting! Your artistic partner R.K. Syrus and yourself have created the strong female lead Sci-Fi story. Can you tell us the background of the story:
New Praetorians is a Sci Fi Revenge story of Colonel Sienna McKnight who obsessively pursues her mother’s killer: international terrorist “The Scythe of Heaven”. She and her Special Ops team fight for the fate of the world and a unique orphan girl. (Plus alien tech and super genius scientists). Each book in the first few books is about a different set of characters in different parts of the world. Sienna is the link to all of them, her story starting in Khorasan, the next in Geneva, and the next in San Francisco. They take place in the same time frame as the first book. We really enjoy playing with time this way. Each book feels like a chapter to a much larger story. We’ve never written comics before and are self publishing which gives us the freedom to make 27, 60-70 page issues.
The artwork for New Praetorians looks incredible, I’ve been a fan of your art for about 10 years now. Your artistic style coincides with your personality; strong, sexy and powerful. How would you describe your art?
Thank you kindly! I don’t know how to draw any other way. I really love ink. It’s very personal and special to me and once I got a Cintiq, I was able to explore inking further. I don’t think I can describe my art. It is just a part of me.
Tell us all about your experience at Wondercon15 this year:
It truly was a dream come true! I had been designing my booth like a little kid all month so by the time the accident happened I didn’t have anything to worry about. My friend Crystal kindly drove me and helped me set up. My boyfriend was my sidekick the entire time helping me in every way. My friends Kyle Vogt and Cynthia kept the energy up hanging out with us as we were really exhausted from the concussions. My heart was filled with happiness and love and I had a great time! It was extra special to have been on the Comics on Comics Panel and talk about and show off my book! Very surreal. Lots of artists dream of doing a book but actually having made one and having it in hand… It’s amazing!
I sometimes ask artists to give inspirational messages and advice to their younger fans. Could you shed some knowledge for them:
1: do by doing.
2: check out: Toltec 4 agreements
3: practice EVERY DAY NO MATTER WHAT!
4: EVERY DAY! Practice! Get those 100,000 hours in! Yea people say 10,000. I say 100,000.
You’ve had a nice modeling career as well, what publications have you been featured in?
Taboo, Maxim and others listed on satinephoenix.net <CLICK HERE
What other projects have you worked on?
I work with the Loyal Subjects as a designer and illustrator. Recently illustrated: “the absolute beginners guide to domination” by Mistress Absolute. My yearly charity event CelebrityChariD20.com where we raise money for Reach Out and Read rorlosangeles.org by playing table top role playing games designed by Game Designer Keith Baker (Eberron/Gloom). I’m working with the kind gents at Gygax Magazine on a new Podcast but i’m not sure how much I can say about it until it is out. I started DnDMelt (the Hollywood Table top gaming group) and DrawMelt (Cosplay life drawing) at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood. As you can see, I love bringing the community together.
What plays in your ipod while you draw?
I really like Eskmo, Trentmoller, Modeselektor, Charles Mingus, Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Portishead and Halou. Lots of Downtempo and Trip hop. There are many more, more variety like Die Antwoord and Soundtracks to movies but in the last 6 months I have been absorbing Biohacking and neuroscience podcasts. LOTS of Philosophy audiobooks and anything sci fi or Neil Gaiman. LOTS of audiobooks. I work 10-16 hours a day by myself, and I need a variety of stimulus.
We all enjoy simple pleasures, what are some simply pleasures your enjoy?
Food, good food and making food. Good podcasts. I LOVE hiking by myself, just out early in the morning when there is no one else out. I love stretching and sometimes I’ll work out just to stretch for a half hour afterwards. Driving, I just drive around sometimes. I live near Bel Air and sometimes I just drive around the hills and the winding roads in my super sexy Mercedes (which i only drive on the weekends when I get a moment of not working). Just the trees and the houses and calm alone time make me so happy. I’ll even not put music on, I think just being alone is a simple pleasure I enjoy.
The future of the glorious Phoenix looks bright, tell us all your wonderful plans you have in the works:
New Praetorians is the biggest project. It’s my 15 year plan. I’ll always play and share my love of table top games with the community. That’s what i’m doing when I’m not working: working/volunteering.
What does Dark Beauty mean to you?
To me dark beauty is the dark, sexy part of all of us that most people tend to shy away from. There is an elegant beauty to darkness.
